Bulk Beef Buying 101: What You Need to Know Before Filling Your Freezer

If you're thinking about buying beef in bulk but don't know where to start, don't worry - you're not alone. We get questions all the time from families wondering how much meat they'll get, how much space they need, and how to make the most of their purchase.

At A & B Hill Ranch, we make the process simple, transparent, and personal. Whether you're buying a quarter, half, or whole beef - or picking up one of our bundle boxes - this guide will walk you through what to expect.

How much Freezer Space Will I Need?

Here's a general rule of thumb:

  • 1 cubic foot of freezer space per 35-40 lbs. of packaged meat.

A chest freezer or upright deep freezer is ideal.

What's a Cut Sheet?

When you order a half or whole beef, you get to customize how your beef is processed. A cut sheet is a form you fill out for the butcher that covers things like:

  • How thick you want your steaks

  • How many pounds per roast

  • Whether you want bone-in or boneless cuts

  • What to do with trim: Ground beef? Stew Meat? Sausage?

  • Whether or not you want organ meat?

If this sounds overwhelming, don't worry - we'll walk you through it or even handle it for you with our standard cut recommendations.

Understanding Beef Labels: Grass-Fed, Grain-Finished, USDA

We raise our cattle grass-fed and grain-finished, which means:

  • They're born and raised on pasture

  • We finish them with a grain-based ration for better marbling, flavor, and tenderness

  • All animals are processed at USDA-inspected facilities

Why this matters:

You get the benefits of pasture-raised beef with the flavor and consistency families love - all raised humanely, locally, and by a family you can trust.

How Much Does Beef Really Cost Per Meal?

Buying bulk beef is an investment up front - but the savings add up.

Let's say your quarter beef ends up costing $7/lb. (average across all cuts):

  • 1 lb. of ground beef = 4 servings -> $1.75/serving

  • 1 roast = 2-3 meals for a family

  • Steaks that would cost $18-$24/lb. at the grocery store are already in your freezer!

You're paying once for 6-12 months of meat - no price hikes, no empty shelves, and no surprises.
